A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
